If your water heater is leaking
- Close the cold-water supply valve, usually on the pipe at the top of the tank.
- For an electric heater, switch off its breaker. For a gas heater, turn the gas control to Off or Pilot.
- If you smell gas, leave the building and call your gas company or 911 from outside.
